The Reality of Social Work Safety
Social work is one of the most dangerous professions that nobody talks about. You enter unknown environments, often alone, to work with people in crisis who may see you as the enemy.
Your agency gave you a caseload. They probably didn't give you adequate safety training. They definitely didn't give you permission to put your safety first.
We're giving you that permission.
You cannot help anyone
if you're not safe yourself.
What You Can Do Today
Before Every Visit
Research the address. Review the case history. Tell someone your schedule. Park facing out. These 5 minutes could save your life.
At the Door
Pause before knocking. Listen. Look. Stand to the side, not in front. Trust any hesitation you feel.
Inside
Scan for exits. Note who's present. Stay near the door. Never let anyone get between you and your escape route.
