5-Minute Safety Check for Your Home
A quick walkthrough to find your home's weak points — no tools required, no paranoia necessary.
Most home security advice sounds like it's meant for people living in fortresses. This isn't that. This is a practical 5-minute walkthrough you can do right now — in whatever you're wearing, with nothing but your eyes and your common sense.
The goal isn't to make your home impenetrable. It's to make it less attractive than the next one.
The 5-Minute Walkthrough
Front Door Check
Stand outside your front door and ask yourself:
- Can someone hide near this door without being seen from the street?
- Is there a peephole, and can you actually see who's there?
- Does your door frame feel solid when you push against it?
- Could someone see inside through nearby windows?
Window Walk
Do a quick walk past every ground-floor window:
- Do all the locks actually work? Try them.
- Could someone easily reach any of them from outside?
- Can passersby see your valuables from the street?
- Are there any that stay unlocked "because it's easier"?
Side & Back Access
Check every other entry point:
- Is your back door as secure as your front door?
- Garage door — does it lock automatically, or could someone slip under?
- Sliding doors — is there a bar or pin in the track?
- Any basement windows or pet doors large enough for a person?
Lighting & Visibility
Think about your home at night:
- Is your entrance well-lit, or could someone approach in shadow?
- Are there dark corners around your property?
- Can neighbors see your doors from their homes?
- Do your outdoor lights actually work? (Test them tonight)
The "I'm Not Home" Test
Look at your home like a stranger would:
- How obvious is it when no one's home? (Packages on porch, dark house, car gone)
- Do you have any signs of a security system — real or not?
- Could someone watch your routine from outside?
- Is there anything that screams "valuables inside"?
The single most effective security upgrade is a solid deadbolt with a reinforced strike plate. It takes 10 minutes to install and makes door kick-ins nearly impossible. Everything else is secondary.
What to Do With What You Found
You probably noticed a few things. That's the point. Write them down — not to stress about, but to address one at a time.
Tonight: Fix any obvious oversights. Lock that window you've been leaving open. Move the spare key from under the mat.
This week: Pick the one thing that bothered you most and address it. Maybe it's better lighting. Maybe it's finally getting that deadbolt.
This month: If you want to go deeper, do this walkthrough again at night. You'll see different things.
Security isn't about living in fear. It's about awareness — knowing what's there, making smart choices, and then forgetting about it. You've just taken a real step toward that.
